Effective Bird Control for Hospitals

Healthcare

Hospitals must take extra care to avoid pest bird infestations. Bird droppings can carry any of 60 known diseases—including histoplasmosis, encephalitis, salmonella, meningitis, and toxoplasmosis, even the West Nile virus.

Birds often gather on rooftops near air ducts and HVAC units. They build nests and leave droppings on or near the blowers and compressors that direct air to hospital rooms and other patient areas. This contaminated air can carry diseases and spores that can easily infect patients with weakened immune systems. Bird droppings can also create a health hazard on exterior lunch tables, benches and chairs used by staff or other workers. These droppings can even be carried inside by visitors walking on entryways covered with bird droppings.

Why & How Birds Cause Costly Damage

Pest birds can do considerable damage to hospital buildings. Nesting debris can interfere with and degrade AC vents, skylights, solar panels, signage, lighting fixtures and security cameras. This debris can also clog up rain gutters, leading to roof leaks. The acidic nature of bird droppings can “eat” into and permanently damage steel, aluminum, vinyl, plastic and glass. Bird droppings can also “freeze up” windows that are designed to open.

Act Proactively to Deter Birds

To protect patients, staff, visitors and buildings from the many problems caused by pest birds, a proactive approach is best, one that uses humane, effective bird deterrents to keep birds from perching, roosting and nesting on or near hospital premises. The next best tactic is to deter birds as soon as they’re noticed. Wait too long and it becomes increasingly difficult to remove them.

Bird Control to Match Your Needs

Bird controls most often recommended for hospitals include:

  • Polycarbonate Bird Spikes

An economical way to keep pest birds off rooftops, parapet walls, AC units and many other flat or curved surfaces, these UV-protected polycarbonate spiked strips come in two-foot sections and three different splay widths. The base of each spiked strip is 1.5” wide and can be easily glued, screwed, or tied down to most surfaces.

  • Stainless Steel Pigeon Spikes

These come in various splay widths to provide increasingly wider areas of protection for rooftops, signage, parapet walls and other flat or curved surfaces. The exceptionally rugged spiked strips feature a patented “bend-and-crush” design, which means the spikes are firmly embedded in an unbreakable UV-protected polycarbonate base. This flexible base bends a full 360 degrees, so it can easily “follow” a variety of shapes.

  • Bird Jolt Flat Track Kit

This low-profile, electric track system produces a harmless electric shock that “educates” pest birds to stay off horizontal surfaces. Lightweight and flexible, the track is easy to install—it bends 360° to wrap around school signage—without compromising its electrical integrity. It’s the only electric track bird deterrent system with patented anti-arcing and glue troughs designs for improved safety and performance. Available in six colors.

  • Bird Net 2000

Recommended for excluding pest birds from breezeways, overhangs and other semi-enclosed areas, Bird Net 2000 3/4” mesh netting creates a physical barrier that won’t allow birds to land or nest. The netting is easy to install using Bird B Gone’s complete line of professional grade installation hardware.
