| Question: I am thinking about putting bird spike on my building. How do I choose the spike and what does it take to install it?
Answer: Bird spike is very easy to install! First you can choose between two kinds of spike: plastic and stainless steel.
The Plastic bird spikes carry a 5-year guarantee and available in seven different colors and three size widths 3”, 5” & 7”. The ability to choose a color makes the plastic spike ideal for painted surfaces. Constructed of polycarbonate, it is as "tough as steel".
The Stainless Steel bird spikes come in 1” 3” 5” and 8” widths. I would recommend using the stainless steel spikes if you need a more flexible spike that is a little less visible.
The surface should be thoroughly cleaned and free of bird droppings, nesting materials, rust, peeling paint and other debris before the bird spikes are installed. Once this is done you can install the bird spikes by gluing the spike down using an outdoor construction grade adhesive that is non-silicone based, such as that available from Bird-B-Gone, Inc. The spike can also be screwed down with 10 - #8 wood screws, for every 2 foot section.
The key to a good bird spike installation is to make sure the spike is installed on the leading edges of your building as this is where birds like to loaf or roost. Also remember bird spikes are not recommended for use against nesting birds or small birds such as sparrows and starlings. |
