California Gull

pest seagullsCALIFORNIA GULL
Larus californicus

Life Span
10-15 years

Statistics
Length: 18 to 21 inches long with a 40 to 50 inch wingspan.

Physical Description
They are in general medium to large birds typically grey or white, often with black markings on the head or wings. They have stout, longish bills and webbed feet.

Distribution
These birds are primarily a coastal breeder. In winters they drift somewhat southward, occurring commonly down to California. This species was formerly almost exclusively coastal in distribution, but can now also be found at large lakes and rivers.

Habitat
Gulls are typically coastal or inland species, rarely venturing far out to sea. They are migratory and most move to the Pacific coast in winter.

Diet
Most gulls, particularly Larus species, are ground nesting carnivores, which will take live food or scavenge opportunistically. The live food often includes crabs. They mainly eat insects, fish and eggs. They also scavenge at garbage dumps or docks. They may follow plows in fields for insects stirred up by this activity.pest gulls

Behavior
Gulls — the larger species in particular, are resourceful and highly-intelligent birds, demonstrating complex methods of communication and a highly-developed social structure. Certain species have exhibited tool use behavior. Many species of gull have learned to co-exist successfully with man and have thrived in human habitats. These birds forage in flight or pick up objects while swimming, walking or wading.

Reproduction
Their breeding habitat is lakes and marshes in western North America. They nest in colonies, sometimes with other birds. The nest is a shallow depression on the ground lined with vegetation and feathers. The female usually lays 2 or 3 eggs. Both parents feed the young birds.

Conservation Status
Migratory/Protected

Voice
These water birds make a high-pitched squawking sound and a ky-eow sound.
