Physical Description
These heavily-built geese are grey-brown with a pale breast and a black neck. The head is black with a white band under the chin.
Distribution
Canada geese are native to North America, but they have been introduced to Britain and Scandinavia.
Habitat
They are found on large inland bodies of water such as lakes, reservoirs and large ponds; as well as on seashores and rivers. Canada geese are grazers so they are often found on grassland.
Diet
Seeds, grasses and aquatic plants make up the main portion of their diet.
Behavior
 They feed in shallow water, pastures and arable land. These geese are most likely to return to the area they were born, and as a result many different breeds have evolved in North America to take advantage of their preferred habitat. The different breeds vary in size as well as coloration. Like other geese, they are gregarious, and fly together in a V-shaped or diagonal line formation. The adults molt their flight feathers and become flightless for about 3-4 weeks in the summer.
Reproduction
Canada geese pair for life. The female lays around 5 eggs in a shallow scrape in the ground, lined with feathers and soft vegetation. She incubates them for up to 30 days while the male stays near.
