Solving Pest Bird Problems in South Dakota

South Dakota Bird Control

The Mount Rushmore State is no stranger to pest bird problems. A few months ago, an eastern South Dakota farm with 1.3 million egg-laying chickens was infected with the deadly flu virus. Flandreau-based Dakota Layers has taken extensive biosecurity measures to prevent an outbreak in their barns. The U.S. Department of Agriculture also confirmed the avian flu in a flock of 33,300 birds in Spink County. So far, the virus has led to the deaths of nearly 289,000 birds in South Dakota since it appeared in the state last month. This marks the sixth South Dakota farm confirmed with deadly bird flu. In addition, the bird flu has already been discovered at eight turkey farms in South Dakota, affecting nearly half a million birds. Many of these farm birds are infected by wild birds.

South Dakota also has a goose problem. In the last decade, the number of geese has grown to more than 270,000. The large birds have become a huge burden to agriculture. One upset farmer who lost 15 acres of newly planted grain to geese last spring noted that three geese eat as much as a head of livestock. Owing to a resilient bird and federal restrictions on hunting geese, state game managers have a surplus of over 150,000 geese.

Here’s what the bird control experts recommend for solving South Dakota’s bird control problems:

Wild Bird Deterrents

To keep wild birds from infecting farm birds with the bird flu, the Bird-Hazing System releases a light haze of EcoBird 4.0. Made with methyl anthranilate, the non-toxic, EPA approved food-grade ingredient irritates a bird’s mucous membranes, forcing birds to leave.

How to Deter Canada Geese

Bird B Gone’s Avian Migrate Goose & Bird Repellent irritates the birds’ mucous membranes causing them to avoid the area. The chemical won’t harm geese, pets or people; yet it repels geese from golf courses, industrial parks, and similar commercial property.
