Effective Bird Control for Strip Malls

Effective Bird Control for Strip Malls

Posted on August 7, 2014 by Kathy Fritsch in Bird Control

Outdoor strip malls are everywhere. Birds are everywhere. Put this together and birds are at every strip mall. Effective bird control products would prove to be an essential part of the success of the strip mall businesses. When bird control is implemented, pest birds will fly away to find a more comfortable spot to roost and nest.

If the pest bird problem is ignored, build-up of droppings and nesting materials will not only deface the building but cause damage as well. Bird feces are very acidic and this means the droppings can eat into the signage, paint, awning materials and even metals. The nesting materials can also clog the gutters which could lead to roof leaks over time. The nesting debris can also interfere with the workings of the rooftop AC units. All this damage could add up to very costly repairs and costly replacements. Installing bird control products before any of this comes close to taking place is a very cost effective way to save a lot of money.

Thankfully, there are many effective, safe and humane bird control products that can be used to create barriers so the birds cannot roost or nest. There are three very operative methods that should be considered to keep your business bird free.

Heavy-Duty Bird Netting

Heavy-duty bird netting is made of very strong polyethylene with high burst strength of 40 pounds. This type of bird netting is water and rot-proof and will totally exclude the pigeons, starlings, crows and sparrows, which are all pest birds. There are various mesh sizes to choose from. The 2" mesh is great for pigeons, seagulls and other larger size birds. The mesh is better for blocking out smaller birds such as the starlings and sparrows. There are choices in color; black and stone. This helps with the invisibility factor of the netting. When installed correctly, it will be nearly invisible from the ground.

Bird Spikes

If they cannot land, they will fly away.. The strategy is simple, and it is what bird spikes successfully do. The spiked strips look intimidating, but they will not injure the birds or maintenance crews. In fact, bird spikes have been approved by several humane groups around the world--including the U.S. Humane Society and Pigeon Control Advisory Service (PICAS).

Bird spikes are made of rigid U.V. resistant, unbreakable polycarbonate or high strength, durable stainless steel designs. The stainless steel spikes are available in various widths; plastic spikes come in various widths as well. Plastic bird spikes come in a variety of colors; white, tan, gray, black, brown, brick red and crystal clear. They make it easy to match the exterior color scheme of your business.

Electric Tracks

Electric tracks cause a harmless electric shock when the birds land on it. It does not harm the birds, but once they feel the jolt, they will be deterred because they will not want to return to the area. The tracks are ideal in areas such as roof lines, parapet walls, I-beams, ledges, eaves and company signs. This bird control product has the lowest profile design. The tracks at their highest point only measure 1/4". You will barely notice them. To add to their discreet appearance, they come in different colors to blend in with the surface they are on.
