The Food Processing Industry Needs Bird Control

There are a whole bunch of problems that can arise when pest birds are allowed to loiter about a food processing plant. There are serious health issues that can arise and the birds and their nesting materials and feces can cause extensive damage to machinery, and the product itself will get contaminated. Pigeons, sparrows and starlings are the types of pest birds that are a common sight in and around industrial and commercial facilities. Most of these types of facilities provide the perfect type of roosting and nesting shelters, not to mention the easily accessed food source close by. The droppings from the pest birds are very corrosive and the acidity from the droppings can ruin the building structure, the product in the building and the machinery. The droppings also are known to carry over 60 known transmittable diseases. Health officials have been known to close down plants where the bird feces, feathers and nesting debris have contaminated the area. Before any of this occurs, the easy solution is to apply bird control products to keep birds away.

Plant managers need to first determine if there is an issue with pest birds. They need to survey the area and look for any signs that the birds are active in the plant. In order to implement an effective pest bird control strategy you must first know if the birds are nesting, roosting and if there is open food sources, water and shelter that would draw them in. Once it is determined what the birds are doing and where they are going to, the plan of action can be made to install bird control products. There are key areas where birds are drawn to, and where bird control can be installed.

Roofs, Parapet Walls and Ledges

Bird spikes or a bird shock system is a physical bird control product option that would stop the birds from roosting on the surfaces like the parapet walls and ledges. Bird spikes create an uneven surface that the birds cannot land on. The bird shock system is a very low profile way to manage the birds. Both protects protect the integrity of the structures and both are safe and humane for the bird and the installer.

Loading Docks

Pest birds love the loading dock area and any overhangs. Bird netting would be the ideal bird control product for this area. When the bird netting is hung under the dock superstructure, it will keep the birds from landing and roosting on the I-beams and under the eaves of the building.

Inside Building

It can be more difficult to get rid of birds when they are inside the building, especially if there is food available to them. There is a product that will deter them out of the area. There are fogging units that are programmable and computerized. The fogging unit distributes a non-toxic methyl anthranilate, which is a grape extract that has proven to be effective in repelling birds. This type of bird control product is often used in garages, factories, warehouses and airline hangars.

Food processing plants need to be extra vigilant in keeping pest birds away from the area. Contamination means instant shut down, and the monetary damage from this can be catastrophic. Installing bird control methods before there is a problem is advised.
