3 Signs that your Building has a Severe Bird Problem

In most cases, it’s pretty obvious that a building suffers from a severe bird problem. A good time of day to evaluate your bird problem is dusk (roosting time) or early morning.

1. Look Up, Look Down

Look up: if birds are flocking to your rooftops, parapet walls, signage and similar landings, it’s a dead giveaway that you have a bird problem. If pigeon droppings are piling up and trailing down awnings, canopies and similar areas, chances are you have a serious pigeon problem. The overwhelming presence of nests and feathers is another big clue. If you have holes in your siding, you have a woodpecker problem. If you have mud nests under your eaves, you have a swallows problem. Look down: you have a serious pigeon problem if your walkways, windowsills, display windows and doors are covered with bird droppings. If your lawns are denuded and your plants are being trampled, you have a goose problem. If your prized Koi are missing from your pond, chances are, you have a Heron problem.

2. Look at Rooftop Equipment

If your rooftop AC units are clogged and operating intermittently, you have a serious bird problem. If your solar panels, rotating air vents light fixtures and security cameras are covered and partially inoperative due to mounds of bird droppings and nests, you need some major bird control. If your rain gutters are not draining rain runoff, you probably have lots of bird nests (old and new) in your gutters.

3. Look for Heavy Bird Pressure

Bird Pressure defines the level of commitment birds have to various locations where they nest, roost, eat and spend time. You need to understand bird behavior and their attachment to a site or venue in order to determine the most effective way to get them to leave and prevent them from returning. Heavy Bird Pressure indicates a very high level of commitment. It usually refers to locations where birds find protection from the elements. It may be where they were born, have established nests or a place they consider home. Birds are not easily deterred from heavy pressure areas.
