Bird Deterrent Foil and other Visual Deterrents are Cost Effective
Homeowners, boat owners and property managers all have something in common. It is pest birds, their droppings and all the problems that go along with them. Homeowners find themselves washing bird droppings off the patio furniture and off the BBQ every week. Rain gutters get clogged with bird nest materials. The pool and spa become a bird bath, and the droppings contaminate the water. Boat owners come across hardened bird droppings when they get to their boat on the weekend. Their antennas and masts are covered in the messy and ugly dried white droppings. Fresh droppings are very slippery on the deck which could cause slip and fall accidents. Property managers have to worry about pest bird droppings and nesting debris interfering with air conditioning units, rooftop ventilators, solar panels, security cameras, company signs and the list goes on and on.
Thankfully, there are low-cost solutions to all these pest bird problems. Visual deterrents are a great first step in ridding the property of the pests. They are easy to install, low cost, and will work immediately.
Bird Deterrent Foil
Bird deterrent foil, or as it is commonly called, flash tape, is an effective first measure and is quick and easy to implement anywhere. The tape comes in rolls of 1” by 50’. They are sold in packs of three for under $15.00. The tape is cut into strips and then attached to the area where the birds need to be deterred. The bird deterrent foil is made from an iridescent red Mylar film. The tape is highly reflective and shiny and will cause a visual disturbance that scares the birds away. It is ideal for usage in areas such as trees, fruit trees, grape vines, gardens, balconies, overhangs, boats and patios to name only a few places the flash tape can be an advantage.
Scare Diverters
Another type of visual bird deterrent is the scare diverters. These teardrop-shaped hanging bird deterrents have a feature of a predator eye on a reflective surface. Movement of the diverters causes the same trigger as the bird deterrent foil tape does, fight or flight. The birds will instinctually fly away to a safer place. There is a swivel attachment that can be added to its effectiveness. The attachment allows the diverters to rotate 360 degrees. More movement equals more fear in the birds. The diverters can be hung in trees, patios, and sides of the home, boats, eaves, gazebos and overhangs.
Scare Balloons
The scare balloon is also an inexpensive visual bird deterrent that can be put into use immediately. It, too, has a shiny reflective surface. The balloons also feature bright colors and a predator eye design. The design and reflective surface works together to confuse and frighten the birds. The scare balloons can be hung anywhere the bird deterrent foil and scare diverters can be hung. The balloons can be partially filled with water and allowed to float in the pool or hot tub to keep the birds from using these places as their bird bath.
It is important to keep birds out of areas where humans inhabit. The bird’s droppings are not only unsightly and messy, but they are a health hazard as well. The droppings harbor over 60 transmittable diseases and nests with the droppings also attract mites, bed bugs and mold.
When using visual deterrents, it is best to move them around from time to time so that the birds do not get too use to the one type of deterrent. Physical and sound deterrents can also be added along with the visual deterrents to create a bird-free environment.
