Bird Migration is beginning, are you ready

Scientists at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology recently documented the migration patterns of 118 bird species throughout the Western Hemisphere. Many birds begin their migration in February and continue on to June. Most follow an inland path on their journey in the spring. Mountain chains and isthmuses funnel many migrants along narrow inland routes. To see which species follow which route, check out this Migration Map, courtesy of Cornell University.

Act Now -- Before Birds Arrive

If you’re a property owner and want to keep these birds away from your property, the bird control experts at Bird B Gone have a few humane suggestions. Number one: be proactive and don’t wait for birds to arrive before you take action. Many birds are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which makes it illegal to intentionally capture, kill or disrupt certain birds or their nests and eggs. There’s also the Endangered Species Act to protect birds from extinction. Both can impose fines for violators. Here are some of the most popular, effective and humane bird deterrents currently offered by Bird B Gone:

Bird Spikes. Harmless to birds and maintenance crews, Bird Spikes won’t allow birds to land on or near them. They come in strong, rigid unbreakable polycarbonate or flexible stainless steel. Plastic bird spikes are available in a variety of colors—including crystal clear, brick red, light grey, brown, black and tan—to blend in with their surroundings. Easy to install on most surfaces using nails, screws or glue, bird spikes deter a wide range of birds. For really large birds like seagulls, cormorants, turkey vultures and raptors, there’s the Mega Spike, which features 7-inch spikes of marine-grade stainless steel. To keep rain gutters, free of bird nests, debris and droppings, opt for the Gutter Spike, which is uniquely designed to mount easily in rain gutters.

Bird Slope. Ideal for deterring swallows, starlings, pigeons and seagulls from eaves and similar areas, Bird Slope slippery PVC panels are angled to prevent birds from getting a solid footing when they try to land. The panels are U.V. protected and sun- and weather resistant to last longer. They blend in with most architectural styles and come in two colors—stone and grey.

No Knot Bird Netting. Recommended for use against pigeons, sparrows, starlings, crows and gulls, No Knot Bird Netting keeps pest birds away from AC units, ducting and other rooftop areas. Available in a variety of sizes and custom cuts—including 2- and 3/4-inch mesh. The netting is light, handles easily and made of flame resistant polypropylene. It’s also ISO 1806 Protocol Mesh Tested and U.V. stabilized.

Solar Bird Chase Super Sonic. Scientifically designed to frighten birds, this sonic device broadcasts pre-recorded distress and predator calls for as many as 22 species of birds. It exploits a bird’s natural fear of predators and their acute sense of hearing. It deters pigeons, crows, gulls, starlings, woodpeckers, grackles and many other pest birds. It can be set to scare off a specific bird or left on its "general" setting to scare all birds. The bird distress and predator calls are repeated every 10 minutes, and the device can be programmed to turn on or off at night. A volume control adjusts the sound intensity of birdcalls—from 65-105 decibels. The sounds resemble normal birdcalls to the human ear. Yet unlike ultrasonic bird deterrents, which birds can’t hear, the Bird Chase device emits sounds within a bird’s hearing range, making it highly effective.

Bird Jolt Flat Track. Ideal for use against pigeons, sparrows, gulls, starlings, crows and other birds, this electrified track “educates” birds to stay away with a harmless electric jolt. Recommended for use on ledges, rooflines, parapet walls, eaves and signs. The tracks feature a low-profile design that measures just 1/4-inch at their highest point. They come in four colors—grey, stone, black and terracotta—to blend in naturally with the venue in which they are used. Bird Jolt Flat Track is the only electric track with a patented anti-arcing design to guard against track short outs. It’s also the only system with patented glue troughs along the base to insulate the track’s conductors. For added durability and safety, the track features a marine grade Monel knitted wire, which is stronger than steel and resists corrosion. The unique knitted design incorporates a single strand of high gauge wire and a tube-within-a-tube construction for superior conductivity and strength.
