Bird Spikes for the Home
Birds, especially the migratory pest birds, will invade your home in no time. One day your yard will be quiet and still, and the next day you will see and hear all the bird’s activities. What you might not notice right away are the droppings. They start to accumulate rather quickly, however. Bird deterrents will be needed. It is always best to install the deterrents during the quiet and still times so that it stays that way.
Why Install Deterrents
You might be thinking, “Why install bird deterrents? I like to hear the birds in the morning.” What you might not realize is that a lot of pest birds roost communally. So there are not just a couple of birds outside your window singing you a wake up song. There could be hundreds in your trees, on your roof and up in your eaves. Communal roosting translates to communal droppings. Hefty amounts of bird droppings from roosting birds on the home structure and property can be quite unsightly as well as destructive and unhealthy. Pest birds and their droppings carry a wide range of diseases. There are at least 60 known diseases. Upper respiratory diseases such as histoplasmosis, a potentially fatal lung disease, can be given to humans through the bird droppings. The known West Nile Virus is transmitted by fleas and mites which the pest birds transport. Birds also are home to many arthropod parasites including bedbugs, and when the birds live in close association with people they introduce the biting bugs into the home.
Bird droppings are also very acidic and will corrode the structures around the home. Roofs have been known to cave in from the accumulation of the droppings mixed with the caustic nature of the droppings. Millions of dollars are spent each year repairing structures that the pest birds and their droppings have wrecked. Keeping the home free of pest bird invasions by an easy installation of bird spikes should be a priority, one priority that keeps the family and home safe and sound. Bird spikes also keep the pest birds from harm. It is important to pick a humane bird control method. Prevention is a small cost which will take care of a huge bird problem.
Where to Install Bird Spikes
Bird spikes are a simple bird control method that prevents birds from landing and roosting. Pigeons, seagulls and other large pest birds will not land and roost when bird spikes are there. The spikes come in different widths from 3” to 7” and what you buy depends on the ledge size or size of the area they need to be installed in. The bird spikes come in sections, and can be put together to accommodate any length of space. They are UV protected to withstand extreme weather conditions. Polycarbonate bird spikes are made of plastic. They come in a variety of colors to match the paint of the home. They are virtually invisible once installed. Plastic bird spikes can be applied to ledges, eaves, windowsills, light posts and roof lines, to name a few favorite landing spots of the pest bird. Stainless steel bird spikes work the same way. Stainless steel bird spikes can be mounted by screwing, tying or gluing them down. They can be mounted on A.C. units, canopies, and fence lines. The uneven surface the spikes create aid the pest birds to just fly on by. No harm is done to the nuisance bird; just an uncomfortable environment is created for them, which gets rid of the birds, encouraging them to find another location to land, roost and nest.
