Get Pigeons off Your Roof with Pigeon Control Spikes

Pest pigeons will damage your rooftop if there are no bird control products in place to keep them off. The damage they leave behind is their droppings. The droppings are very acidic and can eat through roofing material if the pigeons are allowed to keep making their messes and the feces accumulates over time. Acidic droppings damage paint, wood and even canvas and metals. The feces and nesting materials can also clog vents and gutters. There are known cases of roof cave-ins due to large amounts of bird droppings. A pigeon drops its feces about every 15 minutes. This adds up when there are flocks of pigeons hanging out on the rooftop.

There are others worries equally as important as the acidic nature of the droppings. There are health issues for those nearby to be concerned with. Pigeons and other pest birds and their droppings are known to carry over 60 different diseases that can be transmitted to humans. When the feces are disturbed it can go through the vents on the roof. When the dried feces are disturbed, spores are released in the air that can be inhaled by humans. This is a big problem especially if there is anyone in the household with immune compromised conditions. There are diseases such as histoplasmosis, Psittacosis and Cryptococcosis that you can be susceptible to. Histoplasmosis is a disease caused by a fungus that grows in the pigeon droppings. Cryptococcosis is another fungal disease. Psittacosis is a bacterial disease. If you already have droppings on the roof, take precautions when cleaning them up. Protect your nose, mouth and eyes so that you do not inhale the spores. It is also suggested to wear protective clothing.

When you know the dangers of pigeon poop, it is easy to understand the important of implementing bird control before there is a problem. Money and time is saved when installing bird spikes on the roof before the pigeons have taken over.

Pigeon control spikes are an ideal physical bird deterrent that can be placed around the parameter of the rooftop where the birds like to perch and look out at your lawn. There are choices when it comes to bird spikes. Stainless steel and plastic bird spikes are both effective in deterring the pigeon and other large pest birds. The spikes have a patented center spike design that means there are no gaps for birds to nest between. The spikes are durable and weather resistant made for outdoor use in just about any weather. Plastic bird spikes come in an array of colors which helps with their invisibility factor. When installed correctly, all bird spikes are virtually invisible. Another advantage plastic spikes have is that they are non-conductive which means they will not interfere with electrical or communication and transmission. The spikes are made of a durable U.V. protected polycarbonate plastic. They come in three widths, 3”, 5” and 7”. Plastic bird spikes are cost effective. They come in 2-foot sections and are easy to install. The spikes can be placed not only on the rooftop parameter, but also there are special gutter spikes so that the gutters stay clear of bird debris.

The spikes are virtually maintenance free once they are installed. Checking them periodically for debris such as fallen leaves and twigs and such is suggested.

Bird-B-Gone is the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of bird control products, and they offer advice, training and installation services for those who need help with installation of the bird spikes or any other bird control products.
