Did you know that there are over 300 different types of species of pigeons? I’m sure you are familiar with the pest pigeon, and it does not even matter what species that is. Pest pigeons have adapted quite well to the city environment. They are your average pigeon scavenger and wherever there is food, they will be there. Their garden and backyard could be their food source, so protecting your property from the feral pigeon is a necessity.

When the pigeon enters our living and working area they become pests. There are health issues for humans linked to the pigeon feces and nests. Humane bird control products can rid your property of the unwanted pests. Along with health concerns, the feces will cause damage to where the birds roost and nest.

Pest birds, in general, cause millions of dollars in damage each year to homes and businesses. Pigeons as well as other pest birds frequently nest on roofs. They will also nest in chimneys and rain gutters. Pest birds can easily block the drainage system on a home or business. Pest bird nests create a serious problem if they are built near any electrical wiring. The nests can be highly flammable and create a fire hazard.

The pigeon’s feces are the most observable and severe problem. There have been over 60 transmittable bird-borne diseases found that can be dangerous and even fatal to humans. The diseases are transmitted by inhaling the micro-organisms from the droppings in the nests and along the building or ground if the droppings are allowed to accumulate and the dried feces are disturbed. One identified lung disease is histoplasmosis. It can cause flu-like symptoms but can be more dangerous for those with immunodeficiency disorders. To lessen these airborne infections and to protect your property structures, having effective bird control products in place is necessary.

There are cost effective, effortless and efficient bird control methods on the market. Whether you choose visual deterrents, physical bird deterrents or sound deterrents, safe and humane products is the key to bird proofing.

Visual bird deterrents

Visual deterrents simply create a visual deception which makes the pest bird think they are face to face with their predator. There are hanging visual diverters that can be placed around the overhangs on patios or homes, and can be hung in any bush or tree. The durable plastic diverters have an iridescent foil eye that scares the pest bird away. There are also balloon scares as well as flash tape that work in the same manner.

Physical bird deterrents

Physical bird deterrents make it so the bird will not be able to land on a surface. Bird spikes are one type of physical bird deterrent that is ideal for protecting rooftops, ledges, or any other flat surface or curved surface. They are effortlessly installed by either securing them down with adhesive or screws, depending on the surface. Plastic bird deterrent spikes are as durable as steel bird deterrent spikes. Both are virtually invisible when installed correctly. Plastic bird spikes come in a variety of sizes and colors and are weather resistant for long lasting outdoor use.

Sound bird deterrents

A sound bird deterrent device is meant to be used in larger areas. Sound bird deterrent devices scare away the pest bird by intermittently playing predator and distress calls. The device can be programmed for over 20 different types of bird species. The sound can be heard up to 1-acre. The sounds will not harm the pest bird; just coax them to pass on by. The bird deterrent sound devices are very easy to operate and are very cost effective.

All pest birds, including the feral pigeon, can be humanely deterred which will stop them from causing damage to the home, and the health of those in the home is being protected as well. It is always best to be proactive and install bird deterrent products before there is a problem.
