Pest birds can invade your home in no time, especially migratory birds. One day it will be still and quiet in your yard, and the next day you will see and hear the activities of the birds. They will begin making nests and they will roost in the worst possible places, causing a terrible nuisance. It is very easy to put into place a bird control strategy that has the pest birds leaving the area and the new birds flying away to find another location. The pest bird control industry has made bird removal humane, effective, and safe for the environment. There are hundreds of bird control methods to choose from, but don’t let that scare you away from figuring out what you need in order to protect your property, home, and health from the invasion of the pest bird and the destruction they can create. It can be simple and easy, and it does not have to cost a fortune.

Determining Your Bird Species

You will want to first determine what species of bird is in the area. Common pest birds include house sparrows, pigeons, crows, starlings, and swallows, to name a few. They will find areas to roost and nest in the eaves of the home, on the roof, and in the trees. Protecting your springtime garden is also very important if you want to have a successful and fruitful harvest.

Physical Bird Deterrents

Physical bird deterrents are methods that will block pest birds from an area, such as bird spikes and bird netting.

Bird Spikes

Bird spikes protect any flat surface such as ledges, rooflines, posts, and even windowsills, and they can also be applied to curved surfaces. Heavy-duty stainless steel bird spikes are often recommended by architects, contractors, and government agencies and come pre-assembled in different widths. Plastic bird spikes are also available in a variety of colors, including crystal clear, to maintain the aesthetics of your home. There are even specialized spikes designed for rain gutters, where house sparrows and starlings notoriously build nests that cause clogging and the buildup of droppings.

Bird Netting

Bird netting can be used on a variety of areas, including rooftops, fruit trees, berry bushes, and vegetable gardens. These heavy-duty yet lightweight nets are protected with U.V. polypropylene, making them weather-resistant and long-lasting. Bird netting is a low-profile physical barrier that is highly effective at preventing birds from accessing your garden or building. It can also be used to stop swallows from building mud nests under eaves. For swallows specifically, Swallow Shield consists of strips with clear mono-filament lines that drape down after being attached to the eaves; these are virtually invisible from the ground, but effectively keep the pest swallows away.

Sound Bird Deterrents

Sound bird deterrents are another established method for keeping birds away from an area, particularly in large spaces. Sonic units are devices that mimic the sounds of predator and distress calls. These units can be programmed with over 22 types of bird calls to play at ten-minute intervals. When pest birds hear these alarming calls, their natural instincts trigger them to fly away immediately.

Why Bird Control Matters

There are many products on the market that are humane and do not harm birds, domestic animals, people, or property. The hazard of not having a safe bird control method in place is significant. When bird droppings accumulate, they can harbor fungal, viral, and bacterial diseases that may be contracted by breathing in the dust from dried feces. Additionally, the acidic nature of bird droppings will wear away at the structures they land on. Putting bird deterrents in place will provide peace of mind as birds fly past your property.
