Humane Controls Urged to End Senseless Killing of Geese
PETA recently joined opponents fighting against the Dickson, Tennessee city council's decision to euthanize Canadian geese and other waterfowl from Luther Lake this summer. The city council seeks to remove the birds to reduce the droppings they produce around the 14-acre man-made lake. Many regard the controversial and endless killing cycle of geese as a fruitless and expensive undertaking for Dickson taxpayers, as the geese simply return annually.
Geese Are Protected by Law
For all the problems they cause, geese remain protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Act of 1918. That means poisons, pellet guns, firearms or other lethal goose controls can’t be used to kill or harm them, or even move their eggs or nest without a Federal permit. The problem is that geese have become acclimated to humans and their urban and suburban environs.
Humane, Effective Approaches
Geese and other waterfowl can be removed humanely and effectively using a number of proven methods proposed by the bird control experts.
- Migrate Goose Repellent
Ideal for repelling geese from parks, golf courses, and around lakes and ponds, Migrate is the liquid goose repellent that makes grass unpalatable to geese. It can be used on grass, shrubbery or other areas where geese often feed. Easily applied with a handheld sprayer, a single gallon of Migrate effectively treats 16,000 square feet of property. The chemical will not wash off with rain or sprinkler systems. And the runoff will not contaminate nearby bodies of water. - Avian Control™ Goose Repellent
Equally effective in controlling geese is Avian Control™, which can be sprayed or fogged. A fogger efficiently disperses the solution in large open areas, such as parks and lakeside areas using just 12 to 16 ounces per acre. Once applied, it lasts up to three times longer than other goose repellents, and it will not wash away with rain or sprinklers. The chemical run-off will not contaminate nearby bodies of water, nor will the solution harm grass or shrubs. - Fog Force Bird Repellent
This non-toxic liquid fogging agent is ideal for scattering large flocks of geese from lake and pond areas. Fog Force is easily applied using thermal foggers or misting units. Fog Force is sold by the gallon and should be dispersed by professionals using thermal and ULV fogging machines. - Agrilaser® Handheld 500
The Agrilaser® Handheld 500 is a silent, portable, and animal-friendly laser bird deterrent that harmlessly repels pest birds over large distances. Utilizing patented optical green laser-beam technology, it projects a precise beam that birds perceive as an approaching physical threat, causing them to immediately flee the area. Unlike traditional scaring methods, geese do not become habituated to the laser beam, ensuring reliable, long-term performance. The rugged, high-quality device is easy to transport and delivers exceptional accuracy for wide-open public landscapes and lakeside environments.
