Making Peace with Canadian Geese

Making Peace with Canadian Geese

Posted on June 21, 2014 by Alex Kecskes in Goose Control

Canadian Geese can be pretty destructive to gardens. They're big (up to 14 pounds), aggressive (they'll bite and nip at fingers and noses), and ravenously hungry. One gardener thought that with two acres of lush green pastures, geese would leave his fruit trees alone. To his surprise, they devoured his blueberry, pineapple guava, hazel nut and peach plants. The geese even went after his Satsuma citrus trees, yanking immature fruit right off the branches. They also ate his bananas down to the stalk.

Some gardeners have tried all manner of homespun goose deterrents to save their fruits from being devoured. These run the gamut from rubber snakes to firecrackers, pellet guns to slingshots. One guy put a couple of floating alligator decoys in his pond to scare geese. Perhaps the most unusual was the use of a small, remote-controlled truck disguised as a dog.

Needless to say, these goose deterrents didn't succeed. It should be noted that harming geese, disturbing their nests, or using lethal means to get rid of them are largely ineffective and illegal. The ideal way to get rid of geese is to use humane goose deterrents. Here's what the professional goose control experts at Bird B Gone recommend to keep geese away from your garden:

Scarecrows Get Rid of Geese

Using water as a means of goose control can be both effective and harmless. But you cant really stand in your garden 24/7 with a hose in hand. Better to get a Bird B Gone Scarecrow. The motion-sensor-activated device water blasts invading geese from your fruits and veggies. Scarecrows connect to your garden hose and cover a 1,200 square foot area (35 feet out and 45 feet wide). A Scarecrows sensitivity and spray pattern are easily adjusted. Think of it as a day/night sentry, ever vigilant in protecting your garden. Scarecrows work for up to 6 months, delivering thousands of firings on a single 9-volt battery.

The Sound Goose Deterrent

Bird B Gone's Solar Bird Chase Super Sonic scares the heck out of even the most determined geese. It broadcasts pre-recorded distress and predator calls to convince the big birds that their brethren are being attacked. The calls last for two minutes and are repeated every 10 minutes. The sounds resemble normal birdcalls to humans so they won't bother your pets or neighbors. The units built-in speaker covers an entire acre, and its solar powered so you can easily place it wherever geese are most troublesome. It even works on cloudy days, with a battery that kicks in after dark. The Solar Bird Chase Super Sonic is housed in a weather-resistant, UV-protected case. A handy volume control lets you adjust the output intensity of the calls. And you can program the device to automatically shut off at night.

Bird B Gone is the worlds largest manufacturer and distributor of bird control products, providing effective and humane solutions to a bird-free environment. The company provides advice, training and installation services for those who need help with these and other bird control measures.
