How to Check for Bird Proof Problems

Checking for bird proof problems should be routine with building maintenance crews.  It is not difficult to spot a bird proof problem.  Birds leave behind evidence of their crimes.  Businesses need to learn from other’s mistakes. Businesses spend millions of dollars annually on repairs and cleaning up after the birds.  Their droppings and nests are what cause the problems.

It is rather easy to spot.  Check the building and look for droppings.  If they are on the side of the building, most likely they are roosting in the eaves.  If the droppings are on the ground around the building, they are perching on the roofline ledge.  A more thorough check will need to be done on the roof.  Often, birds will nest on and near ventilation systems.  This can clog and the damage can affect the inside of the building.

The first defense in keeping birds away from the building is making the building less attractive to the bird.  Birds will often roost and nest near a feeding site.  Remove water and foot that the birds have access to.  Feeding of birds near the building should not be allowed.  Trash bins need to be covered at all times.  When birds find a spot where they have access to food and water, they will flock to the location and bring their family and friends.

If there are already signs of birds roosting on your building, disinfect the area using a broad spectrum hospital grade cleaner.  It will disinfect and deodorize the area.  There are disinfectants that are affective against over 100 different disease causing viruses, bacterial, yeast and mold.

Accumulated droppings can be hazardous.  Not only do the droppings stain and corrode the surface they land on, but they harbor viruses, bacteria, yeast and mold.  When disinfecting an area, it is important to protect your eyes, nose and mouth.  This will protect the workers from coming into contact with the hazards of the disturbed droppings.

The final step is to apply bird deterrents.  This will bird proof the building and make the buildings very uncomfortable for them.  The type of bird control used depends on the type of building or structure, the location and the type of bird that is the causing the havoc.

Bird spikes are ideal for keeping pigeons and other larger pest birds off the rooftop, light fixtures, signs and any flat or curved surface.  The spikes come in a variety of types and sizes.  There are very durable stainless steel bird spikes.  They are ideal for real harsh environments.  Plastic bird spikes come in an array of colors and area ideal for areas where they need to blend into the environment.

Bird netting is another strategy to deter the pest birds.  Netting is often used commercially in warehouses, courtyards, airplane hangars, canopies and rooftops.  Industrial strength netting is made of a tough UV-stabilized polyethylene mesh.  It is durable, long lasting and rot and water proof as well as flame resistant.  Heavy duty netting comes in several sizes including different mesh sizes.  It also comes in different colors to blend into the background.

Bird Jolt Flat Track is a bird deterrent that is easy to install.  It is also virtually invisible when installed correctly.  It is a harmless way to keep birds off of a surface.  The electric shock the bird receives when he attempts to land will not harm the bird, but simply alter their behavior. This is the only electric track that has a patented anti-arcing design to prevent track short outs.  It also has a patented glue trough on the base that insulates the track’s conductors.
