A Problem for Warehouses Everywhere

When you think of disasters that can ruin your warehouse or derail your company's productivity, you probably imagine the most common and severe issues around. Fires, floods, natural disasters, and electrical problems are likely the first things that come to mind. While there is little doubt those issues can cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, there is another unseen problem that might be ruining your business or building at this very moment.

Pest birds can cause more damage to your inventory, building, employees, and equipment than you might realize. Part of what makes them so dangerous is how ubiquitous they are. Birds are common across the country and in every climate, making them a threat you can't escape. The problems they cause can start small and can be difficult to notice, but they turn into financial disasters in a matter of weeks.

The Problems Birds Cause

You might be wondering what type of problems birds can cause. The list of problems a bird can cause could get quite extensive and range from health problems to structural damage. Here are just a few of the most common problems:

  • Diseases: If birds begin nesting anywhere in or on your warehouse, they are going to drop their feathers and waste wherever they go. You might even have a few birds die, fall to the ground, and begin decaying in your warehouse. Birds, their waste, and their feathers can contain a number of diseases and viruses. Birds in your warehouse can put everyone at risk of catching anything from cryptococcosis to E. coli.
  • Fire hazard: Warehouses are home to any number of large and complex machines. Most large machines produce a great deal of heat while operating. Bird feathers and old nests are fire hazards that cannot be easily removed. Even a few feathers are enough to cause problems, and a full infestation is a recipe for disaster.
  • Electrical problems: Birds tend to make their nests in eaves, gaps, corners, cracks, and other secluded spaces. But guess what also tends to be in those spaces along with them? Wiring and cabling. When birds make their nests in your warehouse, they will use or destroy anything around them to do so. That means your company's wiring is a prime target. Just a few birds can create thousands of dollars worth of electrical damage and disrupt your company's workflow for days and even weeks.
  • Distractions: Having a nest of birds in or around your warehouse is going to distract everyone inside. Whether the birds fly in and out every time you open up the warehouse doors or they fly back and forth inside your warehouse during the day, even a few birds will take your employees' attention away from their work. And when it comes to distractions, even a little one can disrupt your company's productivity.

Real Solutions

So what can you do to safely eliminate birds that have entered your warehouse without spending a fortune or ruining your workflow in the process? At Bird B Gone, we provide a wide range of effective solutions that will fit your situation.  Here are a few of the best options:

  • All birds: If birds are causing a problem in and around your warehouse, the first thing you should do is look for any damage to your building. Birds are able to squeeze into tiny gaps and cracks in your building in an attempt to find a safe place to nest. Start by looking for gaps around your heating and cooling units, vents and ducts, windows, and your warehouse's foundation. If you notice any damage, you should have it fixed immediately. By cutting off all of the access points, you will significantly reduce your chances of birds infesting the inside of your warehouse.
  • Sparrows and other small birds: We highly recommend a Bird B Gone® Mist Net  that can be hung parallel to the point of entry (e.g. loading docks) allowing for the humane capture of multiple birds for proper release. Combine Mist Net with Bird•B•Gone® Sparrow Charmer™—a field-tested, audio-calling device that lures sparrows into netting and traps through the broadcast of Bird•B•Gone®’s proprietary sparrow call.
  • Highly visible and high-traffic locations: Use the Bird B Gone® Sparrow Sky Trap—a bird trap that can be hung from the ceiling and includes a tray that securely captures droppings or other debris. Combine with Bird B Gone® Sparrow Charmer™ for maximum results.
  • Large, “open” indoor/outdoor areas: We recommend the use of Agrilaser® Lite and bird hazing. Agrilaser® Lite repels birds with patented optical technology. Birds perceive the laser beam as an approaching physical danger and fly away in search for safer grounds. After systematic use, the birds will consider the area in which the Agrilaser® Lite is used as unsafe and will not return. Bird hazing is the dispersing a light haze/fog of Methyl Anthranilate (non-toxic, food-grade ingredient) through the air, which irritates the birds’ mucous membranes causing them to subsequently avoid the area. However, we do not recommend bird hazing for buildings that are heavily occupied by people and have large amounts of foot traffic.
  • Larger birds including pigeons: A combination of Agrilaser® Lite, humane trapping, and bird hazing is strongly recommended. To ensure you have the correct traps based upon flock size and location, call our Bird Control Experts at 800-392-6915.
