Solving Pest Bird Problems in Virginia

Virginia Bird Control

The Old Dominion State faces several serious pest bird problems. Every summer, thousands of shore birds turn the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel's south island into a chaotic mess. As many as eight species of gulls, terns and skimmers create nesting colonies on the island—a speck of sandy, pebbly earth less than 5 acres. The young birds careen into traffic, startling motorists and causing accidents. Adult birds dive bomb workers of Virginia’s Department of Transportation, leaving droppings everywhere. Attempts to discourage the flocks—which include dogs, fireworks, shotguns, propane-fueled cannons, owl decoys and recorded hawk calls—all have failed. Today, the gulls alone number 7,000 pairs.

Every few years, usually in the winter months, Leesburg is overrun with hundreds of turkey vultures. The big ugly birds make noise, claw things (cars and property) and create quite a smelly mess in droppings. They’ve literally taken over the southeast portion of Leesburg, stripping bark off trees, eating rubber out of car windows, roofs, hot tubs, pool and boat covers, and destroying BBQ grills and lawn furniture. Their droppings are so acidic, they can eat the paint off cars. And since the raptors are covered under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, lethal means can’t be used to get rid of the birds.

Here’s what the bird control experts at Bird B Gone recommend for solving Virginia’s bird control problems:

For Gulls, Terns & Skimmers

The handheld Agrilaser® uses advanced, patented optical laser-beam technology to harmlessly repel pest birds over great distances—up to 2,000 meters. Much like an approaching car, birds perceive the green laser beam as a rapidly approaching physical threat, so they flee the area.

For Turkey Vultures

The Bird-Hazing System releases a light haze of methyl anthranilate, a non-toxic, EPA approved food-grade ingredient that irritates a bird’s mucous membranes. The repellent effect is only temporary and will not injure birds.
