The Green Mountain State has no shortage of troublesome pest birds. As many as 10,000 cormorants have been gobbling up Lake Champlain's yellow perch. The big, black, fish-eating birds eat millions of pounds of fish annually. This includes perch, bait fish and more, says the Ray's Seafood buyer in Burlington, who buys much of the panfish sold commercially from the lake. The Lake Champlain Basin Program recently earmarked $20,000 on cormorant control this year, which some say isn’t enough to stem the damage.
Vermont farmers are becoming increasingly proactive to protect their flocks from bird flu. While the disease hasn’t been detected in the state, millions of chickens and turkeys have been euthanized across the country in an all-out attempt to stop the spread of bird flu. The goal is to keep wild birds, which are potential disease carriers, out of area barns.
Here’s what the bird control experts at Bird B Gone recommend for solving Vermont’s bird problems:
The handheld Agrilaser® uses advanced, patented optical laser-beam technology to harmlessly repel pest birds over great distances—up to 2,000 meters. Much like an approaching car, birds perceive the green laser beam as a rapidly approaching physical threat, so they flee the area. The Agrilaser® is animal friendly and ideal for repelling a variety of birds.
For Wild Birds Threatening Poultry Farms
The Bird-Hazing System releases a light haze of methyl anthranilate, a non-toxic, EPA approved food-grade ingredient to irritate a bird’s mucous membranes. The repellent effect is only temporary and will not injure birds. Also effective is UltraNet bird netting, which seals out wild birds.
