Protect your home from pigeons with pigeon control

The most common urban bird is the pigeon. They are amazingly resourceful and have easy temperaments, which aids in their ability to flock together, and co-operate with each other in large flocks. This may be good for the pigeon, but not the homeowner. Large flocks on the rooftops, patio cover and in the trees mean lots of bird droppings to clean up. If you park your car under a tree, the droppings will be all over the paint of the car. The acidity in the droppings will ruin the paint of left to accumulate, and this also goes for the rooftop and patio covering. The droppings can stain and ruin canvas and cement. Whatever they land on can be ruined. Unless you are a pigeon enthusiast and have homing pigeons in your backyard, you will want to develop a strategy to keep this bird off your property.

Fortunately, there are some very effective bird control solutions that can be installed around your property that will keep birds away. Here are 2 main types of strategies that have been recommended by bird control experts.

Scare Tactics

Scare tactics include many different pigeon control products. Most scare devices create a visual disturbance that scares away the pigeon. But also sound can be involved with this strategy as well. Let’s start with flash tape. It is one of the most inexpensive bird control products on the market. The tape comes in a roll of 2” by 150’ and is cut in strips to be hung around near gardens, fruit trees, pool areas and overhangs to just name a few locations. It is made of commercial-grade Mylar film and is reflective in the sun and moves with the breeze. When the tape moves it creates a crackling sound. Both the visual disturbance and the sound scare away the pest bird. Similar to the tape is scare balloons and diverters. The method is the same; they both create a visual stimulant that frightens the bird away.

A new product on the market is the Gull-Cat Bird Deterrent. This scare tactic is a life-like crouching and moving cat. It has a unique design which allows the tail and head to move with the motion of the wind. It moves in random patterns to keep birds out of the area.

Physical Pigeon Deterrents

When it comes to physical pigeon deterrents, there is variety. A physical deterrent is a pigeon control method that blocks pest birds from landing, roosting and nesting from a specific area. Bird spikes would be an ideal physical bird deterrent to use on the rooftop, any light fixtures or any flat or curved surface. Spikes are mainly used for large pest birds such as the pigeon. Spikes are available in stainless steel or plastic. Both types are easy to install by simply gluing, screwing or tying them down to most surfaces. The plastic bird spikes come in array of colors that will match your home exterior. They come in different width sizes depending on the area they are installed in. They will not harm the bird not will they cut or injure the installer.

Another type of physical deterrent is the Bird Spider 360. This “spider-like” device intimidates pigeons and other pest birds and prevents them from landing on the rooftop or AC unit; wherever you have it installed. The deterrent has a PVC base made of unbreakable UV-protected polycarbonate with marine grade stainless steel “arms” that will protect up to an 8-foot diameter. Pigeons will want to stay away from the swaying arms.
